Contemplation, that’s a beautiful word; as if one would let quiet

fall between oneself and the object, and the infernal noise,

the silent noise usually present in this space

fades away.

– Ilse Aichinger

In his works, Julius Heinemann reveals an equally poetic and concentrated view of the world. Allowing for silence, the in-between — those voids in which something condenses and becomes palpable which at the same time remains blurred and unnamed. That suggests itself to us, that draws closer to us. As if something were being formulated here, that simultaneously eludes any designation, any determination, any rigidity. This fleeting moment before the act of defining has taken place, before we mean anything or give any meaning, before we make sense.

Through an aesthetic vocabulary, which includes paintings, drawings, and watercolors, as well as site-specific installations and architectural interventions, Heinemann moves closer to a concept of perception that takes what we see at a specific moment in time - an unbiased glance, a sense of amazement - and brings it to the fore.

The medium itself - the canvas, the paper, and ultimately the space that immediately surrounds him, which he refers to and gradually approaches - lies at the center of the artistic process and serves as the point of departure for his observations and reflections. Essentially, the pieces themselves are expressions of the dialogue evolving between the artist and his subject, into which both the Unknown and the Unforeseen flow.

Gently irritating and shifting certain viewing habits and perspectives on a formal level, Heinemann subtly puts our perception to the test. What we feel certain of seeing and knowing suddenly seems to lose its certainty. This sublime play between alienation and recognition challenges one to literally adopt a different perspective, one that encompasses the visible as well as the invisible, the imaginary, the “behind.”

A small blue dot, seemingly sprayed onto a wall in passing, quietly reminds us of the transience of every moment and the lingering presence of another person who was once in the same room. A single stroke translates and maintains the movement of the drawing hand, yet not to hold on, but to make traceable the fleeting nature inherent in the pure gesture of drawing a dot, a line. To indicate a brief interval of time, a moment already gone, never to return.

By considering the subjunctive and creating a space filled with imaginings and possibilities that reveal themselves to us behind the real space, Julius Heinemann opens our eyes to the fragility of our perception and the instinctive beauty of the moment, while always remaining connected to any given concrete situation.

With the experience and awareness that we, in essence, could always see everything with different eyes, that every perspective relies on a movement, and every perception is based on a shift, lies the fundamental prerequisite for mutual understanding and thus every type of togetherness. To look beyond ourselves.

In a world filled with images more likely to blind us than give us insight, Heinemann’s work invites us to pause and observe — as if we were always seeing both for the first and the last time.
